Free calling: free, confidential support for survivors of rape and sexual abuse across Aotearoa New Zealand.
the history of rape crisis support line
The Rape Crisis Support Line (0800 88 33 00) was launched in May 2013 by the National Collective of Rape Crisis and Related Groups of Aotearoa. The freephone line connected survivors with trained support workers in centres across the country.
At its launch, 22 services across six regions (Northland, Auckland, Central, Eastern, Wellington, Southern) were part of this collective, offering free and confidential advice, counselling, information, and advocacy.
“We hope this service will mean more survivors feel encouraged to come forward, because they won’t have to worry about paying for the call or finding their nearest support centre.”
- Georgia Knowles
the current national rape & sexual abuse crisis line
In 2021, the National Collective closed. In March 2023, the Wairarapa Rape & Sexual Abuse Collective Inc. found that the national freephone was still active but unmanaged.
They stepped up and took over administration of the line, re-establishing it as the National Rape & Sexual Abuse Crisis Line.
The service was reviewed, with input from the original 22 agencies. Today, 11 agencies remain active and listed below.
